What Courses Do I Offer?

I run a production company called Free Spirit Film & TV, which specialises in film and video production, however I also run a variety of Film/TV related courses – sharing my knowledge and experience, from over 30 years in the industry, with keen, enthusiastic people.

I’ll say it upfront, because I know what you’re thinking. No, the courses aren’t free. BUT when compared with the prices of other major film/TV/camera courses out there, they are incredibly competitive and extremely good value for money.

Testimonials

In all the courses I run, I try my best to impart on you as much knowledge about your chosen area of interest as I can. I have a lot of experience and I enjoy sharing and teaching others who have a passion for film and television. If there is anything specific you’d be interested in learning that I have experience in, I often adapt courses to fit individual needs.

I also do talks for universities/colleges, if you’re interested in either coming on a course, arranging a talk or getting more information on prices and dates, please feel free to contact me:

Camera Courses:
Whether you are a camera enthusiast, a budding media student, future Director of Photography or independent filmmaker about to produce your first film, the Camera Operators Courses are designed for everyone. It’s simply a case of whether you’re more interested in learning about Digital or Film Camera Operating.

Video/Digital Camera Operators Course:
This course focuses mainly on the techniques and knowledge required to operate modern day, industry standard digital/HD cameras. You’ll get hands on experience with broadcast quality equipment and by the end of the course will have shot your own footage. Having operated as a News, Documentary and Current Affairs cameraman for nearly 30 years, I have a wealth of knowledge and experience to pass on –  from camera technique, rules and framing, to etiquette and career strategy.

Film Camera Operators Course:
This course is designed for those who want to learn how to correctly operate a film camera. Whether for a feature film, TV Drama, Music Video or Nature Photography, this course will teach you the fundamentals of shooting on film (16mm and 35mm).  You’ll get hands on experience with an Arriflex 16mm film camera. Loading Mags, Lenses, Light Meters, Film Speeds and Stocks among many others are some of the topics covered in this intensive training course. When I started in TV, we only ever shot on film – digital technology wasn’t up to scratch – I then went on to DOP several feature films so I have a wealth of knowledge in this area.

Lighting/Cinematography Course:
I also run a Cinematography Course in which I teach the basics of Film/TV lighting. From how to make your films look more cinematic to the best and fastest way to light an interview. Again depending on individual interests, I adapt the course accordingly. You’ll get hands on experience with a lighting kit and by the end of the course will have lit your own scenes and see how they translate on camera.

How To Get Into The Film & TV Industries:
I do regular talks and one of my most popular is “How to get into the Film & TV Industries”. Usually brought in by colleges or universities, I spend time explaining the best and most effective ways of securing your place in the industry, as well as how I did it and what you should expect. If you’re a college or uni interested in this talk, or even a student that would like me to come to your college, please get in touch and we can begin arranging dates. Although this is usually an audience talk, I have also done one on one sessions on this subject, if you’d prefer.

Testimonials:
Here are a few of the things people are saying about the courses I run:

“Chris has true talent and his experience shows! All of the students hung on to his every word. Chris definitely changed the outlook of students for the better. They came away from the talk with a greater insight into what they need to succeed and inspiration to reach their goals.
– Wolverhampton College

“I was surprised in the amount of work we covered in the two days and looking
back at what we’ve done, I am not only glad but honoured to be taught by such an inspiriting person.
– Michael Fowler

“The thing I liked the most is that Chris covered more than just how to use a camera, he talked about the ethics of the job and imparted wisdom gained from direct experience… I had a fantastic day and I can’t thank him enough for all your advice!
– Sylvana Lee Jones

“I found Chris to be a truly impressive man. He gives inspirational and significant advice. Hearing about his trials, tribulations and ultimate success made me feel motivated and ready to go out & achieve my career goal.”
Wolverhampton College

“Chris’s passion and understanding for the industry strikes you from the moment you meet him… The course content has a great balance of theory, technical and practical learning which is all taught in a way that can be understood by either a complete novice or those with a level of background knowledge. I would not hesitate booking yourself a place. I was engrossed for the entire two days…
– Paul Robinson

“The one-to-one training can be tailored to your exact needs; but no stone is left unturned when it comes to the depth of knowledge Chris Weaver imparts. Chris asks candidates what they hope to get out of it and he structures the content accordingly… yes you feel enthused, but also you leave as if you have made a new friend.
Dave Borrington

“There were topics that were not on the syllabus that I wanted to learn more about… Therefore Chris used to happily take his time out after the class finished to sit down and explain to me what I wanted to learn. Any question that I asked him, he had an answer for.
– Sunny Ruthu

I’m actually just about to launch a new course that I’ll be running online – I’ll be doing a video chat with the students and running through some key principles of cinematography/camerawork! Would this be something you might be interested in?
